A portion of a Portuguese-era building, which housed a state-run urban health centre (UHC), collapsed in South Goa’s Margao amid heavy rain Friday night. No casualties were reported, officials said.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the Directorate of Health Services has been directed to inspect the building immediately and take up the issue with the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).

“The Director has also been directed to move the file to the Secretary of Health, the government and the cabinet immediately in light of the current circumstances so that a location can be determined for the UHC [urban health centre],” Rane said in a tweet.

“The building needs to be protected because it is a historical structure and it is very old. GSIDC will take up the upgrade of this structure. We will also take up the repairs of the old Hospicio building. The matter will be examined by the honourable chief minister, @DrPramodPSawant and myself. We will approach this issue aggressively,” he added.

Attacking the government for “continued apathy and neglect of heritage structures” in the state, Goa Forward Party leader Vijai Sardesai tweeted, “Will Hospicio be next? I have been demanding an audit of such structures so that they can be saved from utter ruin. Restore this invaluable cultural asset and others to their glory immediately.”

Earlier this week, a 56-year-old woman, Florina D’ Souza, was swept away in the flood waters and several houses in low-lying areas inundated as the state witnessed incessant rains. The woman had gone to a paddy field with another person in Naqueri Betul village in South Goa, when she was allegedly swept away by the strong current. Her body was later found in an abandoned mining pit.
