Amid the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’sattack on Opposition partiesover violence against women in their states, veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram hit back, saying how can the situation in Manipur be compared to states like Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan. The political slugfest was ignited by the viral video showing Kuki women being paraded naked in the violence-hit Manipur.

“Let’s admit that there were incidents of violence against women in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan. How does that excuse the continuing and relentless violence in Manipur?” he wrote on Twitter.

“How can the situation in Manipur be compared to the situation in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan?” Chidambaram added. “If stern action is required in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan, certainly instruct the state governments to take stronger action, but that does not excuse the barbarism that is taking place in Manipur,” he said.

Are there any Kukis left in the valley? Are there any Meiteis left in Churachandpur and other hill…

— P. Chidambaram (@PChidambaram_IN) July 23, 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday invoked Opposition-ruled states while condemning the recent incident in Manipur. “Be it Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Manipur or any part of the country, maintaining law and order and respecting women should be put above any political debate,” he said.

Union Ministers Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani and other BJP leaders have also hit out at Opposition-led state governments in response to the parties’ criticism of the government in Manipur.

Chidambaram also claimed that ethnic cleansing was almost complete in the state, which has seen clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since the beginning of May.

“Are there any Kukis left in the valley? Are there any Meiteis left in Churachandpur and other hill districts of Manipur? If reports are true, ethnic cleansing is almost complete in Manipur,” he said.

Chidambaram further said that there was “collapse of Constitutional government in Manipur” and that the “writ of the chief minister and his ministers does not run beyond their homes and offices.”

He added, “The central government has not only been incompetent and partisan, it is callous and cruel when it hides behind the smokescreen of odious comparisons… The Government of Manipur has collapsed. The Government of India is in a self-induced coma.”

Meanwhile, National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah said, “Manipur is a tragedy for all of us. It is an apocalyptic matter for every Indian. I am saddened by how hatred is being spread for the chair (power).” He added that the whole world was discussing the situation in Manipur.

“He (Modi) has also talked about the situation there, and used some very strong words. But he should have said it in the Parliament. I hope he will give us a chance in the Parliament to discuss the matter,” he said.
